And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light. And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded. When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. May the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you fully for what you have done.”

— Then set boundaries —

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart. Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one. Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.“
